A New Writing Project

March 16, 2012

Hey everyone.

For a while, I’ve been thinking and hoping and trying to branch out my writing efforts beyond this blog.  Sure, I’ve been a guest writer for a lot of blogs and websites.  But I’ve been looking for something more.

And now it looks like it’s time to clue you in on my new writing project.  My friends, Darrell and Ally Vesterfelt (formerly Ally Spotts) are launching Prodigal Magazine. (Actually, it’s a re-launch of a very well established site, but whatever.  The site is under new management, and just like that dingy Chinese restaurant down the street, an “under new management” sign is always promising.)

And yours truly is a staff writer, which I have never been able to call myself before.  Very prestigious.

Keep reading for the details…

Here’s what that means:

I’ll be appearing on Prodigal a couple of times a month.  Darrell and Ally are assembling a great group of writers to fill up your blog reader every day, so I am, by a long shot, not the only attraction.  There will be something for everyone.

Why is Prodigal different?

When you read my blog, you’re getting commentary.  When you read another guy’s blog, you probably get lists.  At Prodigal, you’re going to get none of that.  Prodigal is nothing but stories.  Go ahead, try to find a compilation of writers with nothing but stories.  Good luck, because you will be looking for a long time (unless you add Prodigal to your blog reader right now.)

Story writing is a huge challenge for me, but I’m sure it will be very fulfilling.

And, I’ve got a super secret writing project…

It’s in the works.  Darrell and Ally are helping me.  But that will have to wait for another time.  Let’s just say that it may or may not be, but definitely is awesome.

Do yourself a favor

…and put Prodigal in your blog reader.  My posts over there won’t interrupt my schedule here.  Sometimes, you won’t know I’ve posted over there, unless you follow me on Twitter.  And you’re bound to read some good stuff that I won’t share here.  Plus, did I mention that the other writers are great?

Oh, and tell me all about the great new blogs you’ve added to your lists, or the great new projects you’re up to – writing, music, painting, diaper changing, whatever!

  1. Are you talking “stories” as in “fiction” or as in “narrative writings”? Sounds interesting, anyway.

Don’t know that I’ve got any new blogs to recommend. I’m trying to spend less time on the computer and more time making stuff. I have a baby quilt I’m working on right now.

    • Sweet. Quilts are good. And by “stories” I mean “narrative,” not fiction. :)

      • I’ve got two coworkers expecting babies around the same time, and I generally have the urge to give some kind of “homemade thing” as a baby gift. I went with patchwork quilts because I thought I could have them finished by June, but what looks quick and easy on paper doesn’t always work out that way. We’ll see how it goes!

  2. Congrats on the new writing project! Sounds very exciting. I recently branched out from my blog to cover some tech related topics.

Hope it’s fulfilling and the secret project goes well.

  3. Congratulations, Matt! I will check it out for a bit. I have been enjoying http://www.ramblingbarba.com. I especially like his Jesus Junk ideas.

  4. This means we get to read more of what you write? When will I ever get anything else done?!

Couple of blogs I highly recommend:

Skyebox, written by Skye Jethani. He doesn’t post often, but when he does, it’s always well worth the wait. http://www.skyejethani.com/

Let’s Talk, written by Cynthia Bezek. Former editor of the late Pray! magazine, she blogs about prayer, and has a unique perspective I love. She recently moved her blog to http://cynthiaprayblog.wordpress.com/

  5. Awesome, Matt! Can’t wait to take it for a run.

pssss – Kingdom Bloggers is stories too.

  6. No new blogs of interest here (I mostly follow “mommy” or “homemaking” blogs, other than a few theological ones like this one).

The project I started thinking about somewhere around 6 years ago (i.e., roughly around the time I was pregnant with my first and actually started _reading_ what was on baby/kids clothes) finally came to fruition last October-ish. It’s called “MommyBee Designs” and is a “line” of children’s clothing that celebrates _good_ behavior over disrespectful or poor behavior (no “diva” or “brat” t-shirts here!). So far we’ve sold a grand total of……1. Zazzle is patiently keeping the interest on the $1.50 that sale made us until I get to the minimum $5 payout. Ha!

Anyway, if anyone wants to check them out, I’ve got the same designs on Zazzle (www.zazzle.com/mommybeedesigns*) and CafePress (www.cafepress.com/mommybeedesigns), and a better explanation of why I came up with the idea on my blog (click through my name).

  7. I look forward to seeing your work!

I was recently asked to join as a commentator a new blog called “Proverbial Thought”. Starting April 1st (Purposely started on April Fool’s Day), we will leave commentary to (hopefully) help people understand Proverbs a little better.

  8. Congrats on the new writing opportunity! I’ve added it to my reader. I’m a fan of stories–both the fiction and narrative writing kind.

Nothing really new, no new projects for me at the moment. We’ll see what tomorrow brings, though :).

  9. In my reader, now. Let’s see how they hold up there.

  10. Discovered Prodigal Magazine about two weeks ago and have been hooked since. Amazing stories. Definitely a “breath of fresh air” in blogging.

    God bless all of you.
