Intermission: Earning My Christian GED

Hey everyone!  I’m back for a one day intermission in my absence from the blog.

So as I wash my clothes and repack them to prepare to leave town for another week, I’ve got thoughts bursting out of my ears.  Here’s a little bit of what’s going on in my head, from my time out of town, to my realization that I’m a Christianity drop-out.  I can’t wait to get back and start blogging again.

Best of My Blog: Why Church Hurts

While I’m on vacation and then on a mission trip to Mexico, I’m treating you to some exceptional guest bloggers and reposting some of my best content from the last year.  I’ll be tweeting and commenting off and on, but will be back full time on the blog July 25th.

Update: I’ll be back on Friday with a fresh post before I leave for Mexico.

Have you noticed all the Christians apologizing for the church?

I have.  It’s kind of the thing to do.  We assume everyone out there has been hurt, wronged, isolated, burned or ostracized by the church.  It’s almost the battle cry of my generation.  “We’ve been emotionally wounded by the church!” Ever since Donald Miller made it popular, some Christians just can’t resist telling everyone what jerks we’ve all been.  Don’t get me wrong, there’s some things to apologize for.

But when you stack up all the apologies, it makes you think that maybe the church is just an agent for pure evil. It’s almost like we’re inviting people to say, “Christians suck and I demand an apology!” I’m not here to apologize or take back apologies.  If anyone should be pissed off at the church, it’s me.  I’m here to ask why does it happen?  Why does the relationship people are supposed to have with the church break down?

Guest Blogger: Frequently Unasked Questions

While I’m on vacation and then on a mission trip, I’m treating you to some exceptional guest bloggers and reposting some of my best content from the last year.  I’ll be tweeting and commenting off and on, but will be back full time on the blog July 25th.

Today’s guest is a blogger I recently discovered, Matt Drake.  His blog, Frequently Unasked Questions, or F.U. Questions for short (which he insists is pronounced “A Few Questions” when abbreviated).  You’ll want to check out his story because, true to his name, Matt is incredibly awesome.  Be sure to give him some love here and then go visit his blog.  Here’s Matt…

Best of My Blog: A Really %*#@ Great Bl*g Post

While I’m on vacation and then on a mission trip to Mexico, I’m treating you to some exceptional guest bloggers and reposting some of my best content from the last year.  I’ll be tweeting and commenting off and on, but will be back full time on the blog July 25th.

I’m going to make an admission.  At home, I’m sometimes a little bit of a potty mouth.

I remember my first day in public middle school.  My delicate virgin ears were burning by second hour, having heard words I never knew existed.

Now, it just doesn’t bother me like it used to.  I don’t swear loudly in public or in front of elders or children and I don’t care for people who do.  But swearing in movies or with friends just doesn’t get me all hot and bothered like it does some people.

What does God really mean by “filthy language” and taking His name in vain?  Probably a whole lot more than we think.

Guest Blogger: Modern Reject

Here’s the scoop, everyone.

By the time you read this, I’ll be far away from home on vacation.  When I return home, I’ll wash my clothes and head down to Mexico for a week with Adventures in Missions.

So over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be doing a little bit on Facebook and Twitter, and posting a comment or two, but I won’t be making regular posts (save for an interlude between vacation and Mexico).

But not to worry!  I’ve lined up some amazing guest bloggers to keep you company, and I’ll be reposting some of my best content from the last year.

To show you that I’m serious about having great guest bloggers, I’m kicking things off with a guest post from Nicole Cottrell, whose blog, Modern Reject, has so much guts and grit, it could beat up my blog if it wanted to.  If you don’t already read her blog, just start punching yourself in the face right now.  Be sure to show Nicole some love here and then go check out her blog.

It’s Easy in America…

Rock, Flag and Eagle

Time to wrap up Patriot Week.

First of all, I don’t get to thank enough men and women who have served in the military.  So if any of you are reading, thank you for doing what I am not cut out to do.

To close out Patriot week, I just want to throw a few final thoughts at you about all the things that are exceptionally easy for us to do as “patriots” in a free society, whether you’re in America, Canada, Australia, or some other British colony…
