It always gets Christians a little bit excited to meet someone who's like them. We feel validated; maybe moreso than other people when they meet a kindred spirit.
I was actually introducing myself to someone and when I told her I was a pastor she literally blurted out, 'Oh, I love Jesus!' She just couldn't wait to say that when she found out I was in the club.
But we have high standards for who is really in the club. If you're talking about someone, it might be enough to describe someone as a 'Christian.' But that could still leave doubts. Is he really in the club, or just a poser? Solution? Tell them he's a strong Christian. Ahhh. My fears are averted. He's not a fake or a weakling Christian with no street cred. He's a strong Christian. He's represent'in.
I think Christians need a special handshake, a street handshake that only real players down with the J.C. will be able to do. If you try to do this, and your Christian brother can't pull it off, you'll know he's not in the club!
My secret Christian handshake goes like this:
Shake hands with your homie, one pump will do,
Go in for the fist bump,
Now open your hand and tickle your dawg's paw,
Ready now?
Hammer the nails,
Lift His name,
Raise the banner, Christian soldier,
Put those hands up, give some praise and a high five,
Shake the tambourine,
Pass the plate,
Give the sign of the cross blessing,
Nothing but net,
Move in for the side hug.
If you're confused, it should look something like this:
Now you know your bro is for real. And you just blew everyone's mind with the best hand motions this side of the Youth Sunday rendition of 'Lord, I Lift Your Name on High.'Christians especially like to try to figure out who's in the club after they die. We've had someone in particular to ponder lately. You know who I'm talking about.
I promise this is the only comment I will make on this topic.
It seems though that Christians like to try to figure out a person's destination for different reasons. There are tons of Yahoo question pages asking if Michael is in heaven or hell. No one can get a straight answer because there were Jehovah's Witnesses, Islam, and conflicting rumors of a Jesus prayer swirling around in his life.
Half the answers were people trying to put him in heaven. People do this, because they don't want to picture someone in hell. That seems natural.
But half the answers were like this dandy quote:
"Michael Jackson is a sinner and will go straight to the flames of hell for all eternity without faith in Jesus Christ."Okay, true. No one goes to heaven without Jesus.
But it's that word straight that bothers me. It's the superfluous description of hell. It implies a tone of voice, a tone that is eager to assert that someone is definately not in the club, MY club, and good riddance. Like we're talking about Hitler or someone like that. He's our go to example of someone who definately went to hell. If the Jew-killing didn't get him, the purported homosexuality surely did!
Kind of reminds me of this:
On the other hand, maybe MJ could be our one homer, the guy who doesn't really belong, but we just don't want to picture him not being in the club.
I'm not even convinced the man was guilty of anything except being mentally ill or just really really weird (which was his dad's fault.) Think about it. No one goes on national TV and says the things that he did while under suspicion for impropriety, and doesn't understand how his explanation doesn't help his case unless he is not well.
Dads, if you don't want your sons to grow up to be giant crazies, give them lots of hugs.
I don't know, what do you think? Are you really excited when you find out someone is in the club? Do you tend to assume people are in the club or not in the club?
Have a great weekend, everyone.

21 people say amen!:
Love the handshake . . . I'll have to spread the message so I won't be doing it by myself . . . because that would be lame. As for M.J.? Who knows. I'll leave that for the final arbiter of such things to decide, and if I make the final cut after my death and get to hear some "Billie Jean?" Bonus.
I say, calm down, leave it up to Jesus, and don't be too surprised at who He invites to dinner.
I want cute little stick figure guys doing my every bidding! Did you make those or get them somewhere?
I don't deserve to be 'in the club' and I pray that He will let in as many other undeservers as He sees fit.
I deserve to go to hell, so I am not happy that anyone else should have to go there.
Yep and sometimes if they don't act and believe (not talking about faith in Christ here, that's a given) just like "us" well they might not be in the club or at least they are more like trial members.
And it bothers me a great deal when believers seem almost happy to say someone will be spending there life "burning in hell". Kind of want to remind them that hey, there but by God's grace go you or me.
Love the handshake and stick figures by the way!
Now you've gone and done it! You mentioned MJ in your blog...be prepared for a barrage of nasty comments questioning everything from your patriotism to your santity from the 'You people leave Michael alone!' club. Their secret handshake contains 121 separate moves and requires a live chicken...so I've been told.
I could no more do the secret handshake than I can do the Chicken Dance or the Macarena at weddings. But I would certainly enjoy watching your rendition!
And I still love Jesus!
The stick figures are originals.
PATENT PENDING
So hands off ;)
I tend to assume they're not. Is that bad or good?
I don't know where MJ is...
I hope he isn't in Hell. Jesus died to save all... I hope that will include MJ. And no, I am not a massively crazy fan of his. (Okay, I'm massively crazy...just not a fan of his).
The only time I disabled comments on my blog was with my very short Michael Jackson post..... Just didn't want to hear the negatives.
And I still feel that way...who knows his heart? All we know is he's dead.
And we don't know his heart.
But, I sure would like to HIS spin on that handshake! What a Thriller! :0)
I admit I am excited when I meet a club member :)
But I like the secret little signs like the silver fish on the car or the cross on the lapel...or my favorite little button I wear often in the summer "Son Worshipper". I get the wink and a nod, the small beep of a horn...
But I also like the all out unapologetic signs like the bumper sticker I saw today that said "If you died today would you go to heaven or to hell?"
AS far as MJ goes...the Bible is pretty clear about the one door and the signs in the life of one who has found that narrow way. I don't need to judge anyone. The lifestyle does that for him.
I have no joy in this and I REALLY want to believe that there is a little foyer in heaven where people who meant to be good can give their "final answer" to the celestial Regis...if you can find me a scripture to support this I'd be thrilled!!
I always like to meet other Jesus followers and yes, am usually thrilled.
As for MJ, only God knows for sure, but my guess is no based on what very little I know about his life.
I never wish hell on anyone and am always deeply saddened when people die without knowing Jesus.
Dude! How long did it take you to do that picture guide for the hand-shake? Seriously.
So when do we get to see the video version with slo-mo replays and commentary?
Hmmm...video, eh?
We'll see.
I couldn't watch the video because it said that Adobe Flash player was running a script that was slow and would cause my computer to slow down, or something. then it asked if I wanted to abort it and I said yes. Didn't know what else to do.
I have a new macbook. Shouldn't be a problem. I have fairly new Adobe Flash player too, as I recall.
I agree that we don't know about Michael Jackson's "fate."
Only God knows.
I also hate to think of someone like that, who was miserable in life, losing out on life eternal.
I think that even though we see all the outward signs of what we know the bible says about someone not being able to be with The Father, yet there is a question as to how God's mercy plays out in the end, if people really were not given the chance to know the truth.
That remains the question - did Michael have the truth offered him and did he outright reject it? Or was the truth never revealed to him?
Since we don't know, we have to say, "I'm not sure and I leave it to God."
For the record, if you patent the pictures for the handshake I would totally try and talk my manager into buying printed and laminated instruction sheets. I would so buy that over a "rapture ready" air freshener.
I'm trying to master the handshake, and seeing if I can get someone else to try it with me.
girlinaglasshouse...I have no joy in this and I REALLY want to believe that there is a little foyer in heaven where people who meant to be good can give their "final answer" to the celestial Regis...if you can find me a scripture to support this I'd be thrilled!!
You won't find scripture to back this up. I used to think this was how salvation worked. I was taught this actually. But it isn't true. I wish it were so, but it isn't...
Matt - This one is near and dear to my heart. Although I do like to meet STRONG Christians, most of the time I don't. Even those who are near and dear to me and are STRONG Christians, seem to be judging whether others are or aren't.
I think God is the only one who really knows whether Michael is in heaven or not. I think God is the only one who knows who is saved and what is in others' hearts.
Matt - I think your blog is great. Are you a secret agent from God?
About who goes to heaven - I saw an article once about a person that went to heaven and was shocked at who was there.
The person was even more shocked to find that those people were shocked that he/she was there.
